Dennis Hopper is crazy.
Blue Velvet is one screwed up movie but man is it awesome. David Lynch has always been a controversial filmmaker simply because of the subject matter of his films. Lynch’s films are often best described as a roller coaster ride that’s about to fly off the tracks at any moment and nearly every David Lynch film flies off the hinges at one point or another. Blue Velvet is only my second foray into the Lynch filmography but I think I’m getting a good feeling for what his movies are like. My first Lynch film was Mulholland Drive and it was one of the best but most screwed up films I had ever seen. The one constant that I’ve found about Lynch is that his films may seem crazy but they are brilliantly constructed leaving questions at the end that will only be answered with mulitple viewings.
Blue Velvet is certainly a Lynchian labyrinth and a good one at that. Although I didn’t like this film as much as Mulholland Drive this films is still one masterful work. David Lynch has to be one of the most insane filmmakers ever to work behind the camera. There are moments in this film that I wondered what the hell was going on. There are multiple moments of deep suspense and tension that have no rival in other films. The film isn’t without issues though there are moments where the film drags but it doesn’t drag for long.
The casting of Blue Velvet was stupendous. Dennis Hopper plays Frank Booth one of the more terryfying characters ever to grace the screen. Frank is a foul-mouthed oxygen sucking monster and he’s terrifying to watch. The protagonist of the film Johnny played remarkably well by Kyle Maclachlan. This was a tremendous performance and his chemistry with both Isabella Rosellini and Laura Dern was fantastic. The casting is near perfect in Blue Velvet with every role being played extremely well.
What makes Blue Velvet so remakrable though is the twists and turns the film makes. From the opening sequences of Johnny’s dad falling down for some unknown reason to the final moments of the film no one really knows what is going on until it’s all over. The twists and turns in Blue Velvet are just stupendous and it makes for an extremely fun film and one that is challenging at the same time. Blue Velvet is one of the best thrillers ever to be released.
With all of these compliments though Blue Velvet is not for everyone. The bleak tone and sometimes hard to follow filmmaking of Lynch has turned off many a viewer including one Roger Ebert. However, if you love Lynch then Blue Velvet just becomes a tremendous film, and I truly feel that it is. Blue Velvet is one of the finer films I’ve watched from the 80’s and the second best Lynch film I’ve seen to date. 9/10

My favorite Lynch film.
Good review.
Thanks. I’ve only seen Two Lynch’s to date but I’ve loved them both. Glad you liked the review.
The Elephant man..have you seen it? I have never seen a Lynch film so I wouldnt understand. Maybe I should check it out.
The Elephant Man is easily the least confusing Lynch film. If you’re going to start I would watch it.
I’ve seen a lot of David Lynch films, but this is still one that I am yet to see. I’ve heard nothing but great things about this film, and it is even the favorite movie of some of my closest friends. After reading your review, I really need to get around to seeing this one.
It’s certainly worth watching. It’s my 2nd favorite Lynch so far but I’ve only seen it once. I’m planning on getting the DVD for it very soon. It was a massively good film. Lynch is a madman of film. Thanks for the comment, glad to have you here Thirdman.
I saw this movie when it first came out. I was pretty young then, and was disturbed by it. I watch it, now with a different view. It’s great film making. I love being surprised in a movie like ‘Tarantino’ films and “Requiem For A Dream.”
Gr8 review, as usual. Go CARDS!
Thanks, I think it’s a terrific film. I’m going to give it a rewatch soon. I liked this one more than Requiem. It’s an awesome film and I could imagine being disturbed by it as a kid. It’s a pretty messed up movie. Thanks for the comment.
Go CATS!!
Blue Velvet, I need to watch this film. The review makes it sound very interesting.
Perfect Blue (the film I recommended you) is one I found very Lynch like.
I’ll be seeing Perfect Blue once I start my 4k thread. I think that you’ll really like Blue Velvet. It’s an extremely good film.
