Harley, what a name for a biker guy!

Harley, what a name for a biker guy!

In my opinion there are about three types of horror films coming out these days. There are the remakes (Last House on the Left, Friday The 13th, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre), The Original Ideas (Drag Me To Hell, Orphan), and your direct to dvd films like Laid To Rest and From Within. Both of those films had something that Midnight Movie doesn’t have, and that’s a level of fun. Midnight Movie is a moderatley good to bad slasher film that nearly rips off 1991’s cult hit Popcorn. The film’s main plot follows a group of teenagers (gasp) who are going to watch a cult film directed by a serial killer. The serial killer could be dead or missing they don’t know. There is also a group of cops who go to the screening and a redneck biker and his wife.

The films’ plot follows this group of people who are seeing the film The Dark Beneath directed by former serial killer Ted Radford. The film starts to go haywire though when the events in the film come to life and the people in the theater start to drop like flies. The problem with Midnight Movie is that it starts out really interestingly and then around the second act it just all falls apart. There are a lot of problems with the film but with a lot of horror films I was willing to look past them and try to enjoy the film. The problem is though is that the main problem is never explained or never solved and it ruins the film.

The actors in Midnight Movie are average horror actors. You have your cliched young innocent girl played by Rebekah Brandes who was pretty solid in her role. I don’t think it’s anything memorable but it didn’t stand out as bad like some of the performances did. We have the group of cops in the film which are weakly portrayed. The only really memorable characters were that of Biker, Harley played by Stan Ellsworth and the killer of the film whose weapon and character design was interesting. The film takes a lot of it’s odes from films like 1985′S Demons and 1978’s Halloween. The film is a messy attempt at a horror cult classic and it fails to get there. The film has a pretty satisfying ending and helped clear up some of the mess that was the second act.

If Midnight Movie had been better constructed the film may have been a success however due to a sloppy second act and some downright bad performances the film falls relatively flat. Midnight Movie is the epitome of a forgettable horror film and one that isn’t even really worthy of viewing on a cheesy horror night. It’s the type of film that you see in the $1 bin horror section around Halloween, which isn’t really a bad thing but Midnight Movie is pretty forgetful. 4.5/10

Yeah, it’s a decent pic. I wouldn’t watch the movie though it’s not very good.

Hey now, someone’s being a bit hard! ;-) I know that Midnight Movie is far from perfect, and I too saw it as a riff on Popcorn. But I enjoyed what the film had to offer. It wouldn’t rank on my list of the 100 greatest horror films of all time list, but I still liked this movie.

It’s got it’s moments but I found it to be a little shallow. I think that it could have been a very good horror film had some of the plot holes been filled up. Our ratings aren’t that different you gave it a 6 I believe and a 4.5 is close to that. I just wished it would have cleared a few more things up like how he was able to transport between the film and real life.
